The Review

Frito Lay used to make Wild White Nacho Doritos (WWN) that they sold in grocery stores and wholesale clubs, but that product no longer exists.

Instead they now make a Reduced Fat version specifically for schools. While it is available to the public to purchase, it is harder to find.

In this article, we’ll review where to purchase WWN Doritos, what the product is like, and a dietitian’s recommendation.

Where to Purchase Wild White Nacho Doritos

These WWN Doritos are not available to purchase in grocery stores or wholesale clubs.

They are only available in individual 1 oz bags, so you won’t be able to find them in big bags.

They can be purchased online, on websites such as Amazon. I’ve found them in packs as small as 18 – 1 oz bags, but there are also cases that contain 72 – 1 oz bags.

Alternatively, you could contact a local school cafeteria to inquire about purchasing a smaller quantity directly from them if it’s something they already buy. Since I work in schools, that’s how I obtained mine – by buying them from a school at a la carte prices.

Schools can purchase RF Doritos through their distributor or vending machine company.

First Impressions

image of Wild White Nacho Dorito Chip

Unlike other flavors of Doritos, these white Doritos are lacking that colorful punch. Even the Cool Ranch flavor contains some artificially-dyed flecks to give it more color.

Since we eat with our eyes first, we are tricked into the impression that it will be less flavorful than other brightly colored flavors, even if it isn’t true.

If you look closely though, you will see the powdered flavoring. It looks like the coating on white cheddar popcorn.

The Reduced Fat version of Doritos are also visually flatter than their Regular counterparts. This is likely due to their lower fat content.

Taste & Texture of Wild White Nacho Doritos

When I first bit into the Wild White Nacho Doritos, I noticed that it had more flavor than the Simply Organic White Cheddar Doritos.

Simply Organic White Cheddar Dorito

As I continue to chew it, I noticed a few more differences.

The next thing I noticed was the lack of richness you typically get when eating a Dorito. Since the WWN Doritos are reduced fat, you will miss some of the richness you are used to. Even the organic Doritos have more fat.

As I continued to chew, I noticed the texture is a little tougher and there were more hard bits than in a regular Dorito. These WWN Doritos are made with whole corn and corn bran, two ingredients not typically found in Doritos. Both of these will add fiber, but also make the texture more tough.

Wild White Nacho Doritos Ingredients

Wild White Nacho Doritos Ingredients

The most notable ingredients in these Wild White Nacho Doritos are actually what they do NOT contain.

NO Artificial Colors

Some research suggests that artificial colors, such as those typically found in Doritos cause cancer, and there’s signficant evidence that some contribute to hyperactivity in certain children.

Like the Organic Doritos flavor, the WWN Doritos do not contain artificial colors. This makes them different from almost all the other Dorito flavors on the market.

The lack of coloring makes them less popular than the other flavors, but it’s a good option for those that are sensitive or allergic to dyes.

NO Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

Also like the Organic Doritos, the WWN Doritos also d0 not contain monosodium glutamate (MSG). MSG is added as a flavor enhancer.

This is a chemical that the Center for Science in the Public Interest recommends companies reduce or eliminate due to the negative reaction that some people get when consuming it.

Wild White Nacho Doritos Nutrition Facts

Nutrition Facts for Wild White Nacho Doritos

I’ll highlight just a few nutrients here.

Total Fat

These white Doritos are a reduced-fat version, so they contain less fat than regular Doritos:

Regular Nacho Cheese Doritos: 8g fat
Reduced Fat Wild White Nacho Doritos: 5g fat

Dietary Fiber

Since the school version of Doritos are made with whole grains, they actually contain more dietary fiber than their regular counterpart:

Regular Nacho Cheese Doritos: 1g fiber
Reduced Fat WWN Doritos: 2g fiber

While it’s preferred a child get their dietary fiber from sources such as fruits, vegetables, and less-processed whole grains, every gram counts!

Sodium

There is less sodium in a school Dorito when compared to the regular version:

Regular Nacho Cheese Doritos: 210mg sodium
Reduced Fat WWN Doritos: 170mg sodium

This is even less than some of the other reduced-fat flavors, which contain 200mg of sodium. The difference is likely due to the elimination of MSG.

Schools can’t sell items with more than 200mg of sodium, so the regular version are not compliant.

School Uses

Since the item is made from corn, schools can count this item as a grain. Specifically, one bag of Reduced Fat Doritos credits as 1.5oz of grain in the meal program.

It also meets the USDA’s Smart Snack requirements, so the product can be sold a la carte to students. It could also be found in vending machines in schools.

Since it lacks the vibrant color that other flavors of Doritos are famous for, students tend to choose these less frequently. If selling a la carte, Wild White Nacho Doritos will be your lowest volume seller.

However, it may be a good option to occasionally include on the menu, since it contains less sodium and doesn’t contain the ingredients that some students are sensitive to.

Dietitian’s Recommendation

These Wild White Nacho Doritos have a slightly better nutrition profile when compared to the regular version, but they’re similar enough they still satisfy the craving for a salty snack.

However, at the end of the day, WWN Doritos are still a snack food that should be consumed in moderation.
